Another Cat to join the Swans Academy

Congratulations to our newest Cat who has been selected to join the Sydney Swans Academy, Declan Fitzgerald.

Declan has been a stalwart of the club, playing in the Under 9 team in the club’s foundation year (2013). He has great skills, particularly his kicking which is usually centimetre perfect. Clearly they Sydney Swans thought the same thing.

Over 400 boys aged 10-12 years old took part in the Open Athlete Assessment Trials for the Sydney Swans Academy last month. The Academy involves 600 boys, aged 11 to 19 years of age, who participate in an elite long-term development program under the guidance and support of professional coaches. The Academy provides the Sydney Swans with opportunities to draft home-grown talent and all clubs in the AFL competition have access to recruit graduates of the program.

Over the past five years, former Academy members Brandon Jack; Lloyd Perris; Sam Naismith; Dan Robinson; Isaac Heeney; Jack Hiscox; Abaina Davis and Jordan Foote have progressed to the senior list at the Sydney Swans. They join current co-captains, Jarrad McVeigh and Kieren Jack, as well as key defender Dane Rampe, who were born and raised in the Swans Academy zone.

Declan joins fellow Lane Cove Cats players Max Negri and Ben Cheshire.

Hopefully one day we will be celebrating the drafting of one of our members into the Sydney Swans (or another AFL club).
