It was with much excitement that we all started for the airport early Saturday morning to catch the Jetstar 7:55am flight to Avalon only to find our plane in delay due to the thick fog in Avalon..
We didn’t board our plane until 11:40am – which affectively meant a 3.5hr delay, pushing the limits to our oppositions patience, as they had played earlier in the morning. But Modewarre President and friend Mick Fitzgerald quickly negotiated with the parents to stick around and wait for us to arrive.
Arriving in Avalon we found a beautiful sunny day – no wind, perfect conditions for a huge footy match. We boarded our bus – the famous Geelong bus lines McHarry’s bus and quickly made our way to Modewarre Football Ground.
The boys anticipation of things to come was building on the bus..
Arriving at the ground, the boys made their way to the seniors change rooms, where they quickly changed into an elite group of footy players ready to enjoy the mud and hospitality of Modewarre..
A team photo of players and coaches was taken to get things off in the right spirit.. after all Modewarre is our brother club and we are on and all.
The game then commenced on a damp and muddy ground, but our boys quickly found their groove through some fierce determination in the middle led by huge ruckman Zach Hymers to rampant rover Angus Tesoriero. Banging it into the forward line saw Jed Holgate goal on a number of occasions, some slick play by Harry Arnold and Hamish Brumley saw some great team goals putting us ahead at the main break by that margin.
The final half was extended by 5min due to the high standard of football, with the parents creating fantastic atmosphere, willing the boys on. The second half was a more scrappy affair, but little Zac Holgate saw plenty of the football, as did Rhett Scown on the wing. Cameron Ellis used his strength well on the half forward flank leaving his opposition for dead and Lucius Pimpini was desperate in the packs getting handballs out for the running Jeremy Travers. Thomas Ogier made more than one centre clearance taking a strong mark in the centre of the ground and Matty Pass again cleared the ball to our MOddewrre fill in who kicked an amazing 4 goals for the quarter (assisted of course by our little champions).
The siren sounded and the Donk Cup was ours!!
It was a sweet victory we will savour for years to come..
The rest of the weekend consisted of watching the Modewarre Senior team get up by less than a goal in the final minutes of play..
Stayed at the Novotel IN Geelong on Saturday night – took the boys to see Wonder Woman after dinner at Cameron Ling’s pub!!
Had a footy clinic on Sunday morning at Eastern Beach (in front of the Novotel)
Visited the Geelong Footy Club on our way to Melbourne.
Stayed at the Quest Apartments in Docklands on the Sunday
Had lunch at Platform 28 before the footy

Some fantastic memories were made with our boys over the weekend. Some great friendships were forged over the weekend also.
Thanks to all the Dads & Kids whom made the 2017 Donk Cup such a memorable experience.
New records were set during the event – which of course nobody can tell you about because..
