Under 8

Team Menzel

Great effort today at Home against the Balgowlah Suns.
The game was played at a fast pace and with great sportsmanship.
Handballs again featured with some great unselfish passes to teammates who often scored a goal.
Thanks to the parents for the interchange assistance.
Keep up the practice and we will get even better.
See you next week.

Under 11

Team Taylor

This week saw our Under 11 team come out of the blocks strong, with Blake kicking three goals in the first ten minutes! It was a great start for our team, who often start slowly, but were really switched on from the opening bounce. Lucas and Ryan kicked their first goals for the season – rewarding them for patience and hard work every time they play. All our players did their job and stuck to the game plan, to record yet another solid win. We did beat this team 66-0 last time we played them however, and it shows how all teams in the competition are improving with each round.

It’s easy to focus on the players kicking the goals as the standouts but this Week Joey showed how much of an impact you can have in defence as he continually turned the ball over and ran and kicked us out of trouble. It was no surprise to find Darcy at the bottom of every pile of bodies and James and Max were as relentless as always on the ball. Lachie, Cooper and Daniel made constant yards through the middle and out wide to push the ball up into our attacking zone and were supported by Rafferty and Louis who were always available as targets for kicks and hand passes.

The ball was like a cake of soap from the dew and our players did well to control it off the ground and keep it moving on our direction. Our marking was below where we would like it to be but that was in part due to the conditions. The scrappy play drew our players into the ball, making the contests crowded, but we got away with it as the opposition were having the same marking problems as us. If we use the space on the field more effectively and ensure there is always a couple of players open one kick away all the way up the field, we will start seeing 100 point scores!

Home game this week – so look out Westbrook!

Under 12

Team Farrugia

The team started well this week, with more focus on playing the zone and finding space. This combined with a good defensive effort from the outset meant we kept the scoring low by the opposition.
We are also looking to the girls playing positions that more closely match their strengths, with Izzy and Lily S generally combining well to score, when we get the ball forward to them, and other players more suited to starting in the centres/ruck and defensive zones. We will continue to rotate the players through the zones for experience and so they can enjoy the game, as all round ability is still highly valued from a development perspective.

Our defensive effort was maximised by the opposition, with Lily D, Char Char, Charlotte, Annabel and a return by Zoe this week all combining well to defend. The measure of the effort required was shown with a request by these defenders to move to centre or forward zone for the 2nd last and final quarters.

With the relentless opposition, and our team fatiguing, they were able to run away and score quite a few goals against us in the last 2 quarters.

The ability of the centre team, including Emma, Ducky, Isso, Isabel, Caitie and Lexie to get the ball forward had a few shining moments, but we were kept well restrained by a good opposition. Great to have Elin back again this week, with noticeable drive to get the ball, run and tackle.

Caitie was a standout this week, with a number of times clearing the ball from tackles and kicking the ball forward. Impressive effort and great improvement.

Spirit of the game was Char Char who typified the relentless effort to continue tackling, and sustain running for all four quarters. Also a noticeable lift in effort and stamina by Emma (I know I am biased as Coach and Dad) through the game this week, showing leadership by example.

Thanks also to Merran, and to parents Andy and Mark who helped me with managing the runner and position board.
