U10 youth girls – Expression of interest

The explosion of girls football in Australia has been phenomenal. The new semi-professional women’s league, AFLW has seen growth in youth girls football in NSW surge. This resulted in the introduction of the Under 12 junior girls competition in 2017, which was an outstanding success across Sydney.

At Lane Cove Cats, we fielded our first ever all-girls team into the AFL Sydney Junior league in 2017. We also saw an explosion in girls participating in our Auskick program. In fact, we now have the second largest number of girls playing Auskick in Sydney.

However, the AFL was mindful of the gap between Auskick and the current youth girls pathway. Therefore, they have decided to introduce a U10 youth girls program in 2018.

This will follow the same rules as set out in the AFL Australian Football Match Policy and align with the U/10 boys program, ensuring it  is played in a less competitive environment with no ladders and  finals series in place.

This competition will cater for girls turning 8 or 9 in 2018. In special cases, the AFL and the club would also consider allowing seven year olds to play. But this will be determined on a case by case basis.

If you have a daughter who is keen to play AFL and would be interested in joining the U10YG team, we would love yo hear from you.

Nominations for teams in the 2018 season are submitted to the AFL in December. Therefore we ask you get back to as soon as possible.
