President’s Update – April 2018

4 April 2018

Welcome all new and returning players and parents to the 2018 season. Its looks like being another exciting year at the club, with record numbers both in Auskick and Juniors.

At Lane Cove Cats, the committee and I are committed to making footy fun for everyone. While we will provide the pathway for ambitious young footballers to play at the top, we also wont neglect the boy and girls that just want to kick the ball around with their mates. We recently released a document outlining the pathway for kids at the club, which I would recommend you read. Its also worthwhile going over our code of conduct, particularly for new members to the club.

With the season only 4 days away, I thought I would give you an update on our football program.

We have had excellent growth in Auskick registrations, with over 115 already registered.  This is about 15% up on this time last year.  The team of Peter Beck and his merry men are raring to go, with a great program already in place.

If you haven’t re-registered for the 2018 Auskick season, you can do so now here.

In juniors, we have had even greater growth in numbers. We currently have 140 registered players across ten teams. We have entered our first ever joint venture team with North Ryde into the U13 age group, as well as getting strong squads for the U11 and U12 divisions.

Most excitedly, we are entering a team into the first youth girls U10 division in Sydney. Most of you would agree that the new AFLW has been an amazing success, with girls all around the country now excited about playing AFL. This follows on from last years introduction of the girls U12 competition, adding to the U15 and U18 divisions. We are still keen to hear from any girls that are interested in trying AFL. Remember, we have prize of tickets to a GWS Giants game for anyone who recommends a friend to the club.

In terms of facilities, we are working closely with the council to reconfigure the lower B4 turf field at Blackman Park to accommodate older age groups. At the moment, its only 105m, which only U10s and below are allowed to play on. Our aim is to increase this to 140m, which will accommodate up to U15s. This would enable us to run gala days, or more finals games at this magnificent venue. This will also help us manage the increased number of older age groups playing at Blackman Park during the regular season.

Talking of which, the AFL Sydney Junior fixture was released on 29 March. They have been uploaded onto our website, as well as our TeamApp. If you haven’t registered, please do so before then.

This year we’ve also decided to move the Soiree to an early season event. Hopefully this will help new members to the club get to know everyone, as well as invigorate some early season excitement. So please mark down Friday 25 May in you calendars. We also have the Sports Legends Lunch back again for another year. It will return to the Kirribilli Club on Friday 20 July.

Finally, we are still looking for some volunteers at the club. We are particuly interested in anyone willing to help manage the BBQ/canteen this year, as well as an events coordinator. So if you’re willing and able, please don’t hesitate in contacting me directly.

Good luck and I’ll see you on the park!
