Match Report Round 6 – U9 Hawkins Sunday 20th May

ELS Hall was the venue for Sunday’s Team Hawkins game against Willoughby Gold.

The boys were starved of early opportunities with Willoughby kicking the first 3 goals and having all the play. We looked off the pace and reactionary to our opponents. Having only had the ball in our forward line once in the first quarter, it was a lopsided 0-20 scoreboard at the first break. We needed to find more forward line opportunity when we had the ball and this came with a barrage of centre clearances led by Dylan O’Dowd and Zak Evans. Our tackling was terrific led by Angus Moten, Noah Tops and a great defensive act by Felix Boyle. We peppered the goals and unluckily managed point after point, with Willoughby’s defence not giving an inch. Finally a goal to Xavier Byrne got us on the move.

The boys remained encouraged and we took to task during the 2nd half in a game that ebbed and flowed. Henry Lowry & Harvey King were enjoying their best games and a terrific mark from Thomas Bredenhann maintained our team belief. In the final quarter 2 goals to Hudson Savage secured a positive result and I couldn’t have been happier for the boys and their ability to play out the game. Perhaps most impressive was holding Willoughby to only 4pts in the final 3 quarters.

Best Defensive Play Award: Felix Boyle. Best Team Player Award: Xavier Byrne.
