An away game at Frenchs Forest against the Forest Lions, had the boys on the road early to play against a side that came from behind to defeat us earlier in the season. We were down a few players, but the team of 12 boys appeared raring to go from the start.
Early on we were mixing it with the Lions when we had the ball, but we were failing to slow down their ball movement and defensively we broke down at some of the ball ups allowing the Opposition to score unopposed goals. Our warm up hadn’t quite translated into the first half of footy and despite a few moments of good end to end play we trailed 6 goals to 2 at half time.
A solid message was delivered at half time and the boys were “eyeballed” and asked to lift in their intensity. We needed to stop the Opposition from playing on when they took a mark, we needed to get in closer to make our tackles stick and overall we needed to create an energy that would produce run and voice to challenge the Lions.
The response was spot on. Joshua Hodgkiss and Xavier Byrne put their head over the contested ball and both James and Dylan O’Dowd either created our link from backline to forward line or they hit the scoreboard with goals. Tommy Bredenhann & Noah Tops were also getting their hands on the ball along with Jimmy Graham. They provided us with intercept marks and clearing kicks. Perhaps the toughest of all this was displayed by Jude Lumley who took a great mark under pressure and was subsequently flattened front on. Jude composed himself and slotted a brilliant goal on an acute angle outside the boundary line. It was the type of effort in the 2nd half that we needed and it seemed to inspire his team mates.
With the game clock winding down, we had managed 4 goals to 1 in the 2nd half, but unfortunately the siren beat us in our comeback. The response was spot on, but we must find a way to produce that during the remaining 4 games.
Best Defensive Play Award: Noah Tops. Best Team Player Award: Jude Lumley.
